Woven on pit looms in Chanderi and Maheshwar (Madhya Pradesh), these are two sibling traditions built on the same weaver economy. Chanderi is famous for its almost transparent silk-cotton ground with a subtle sheen and fine zari checks; Maheshwari is heavier, with its distinctive reversible border and a signature five-stripe pallu. Both dye beautifully in soft, jewel-toned pastels and carry a body that is unusual for such a light fabric — they hold their line rather than crumple.
