Chanderi's reputation rests on one unusual property: it is sheer without being flimsy. Traditional Chanderi is woven from unbleached, un-degummed yarn, and it is the retained sericin — the natural gum on the silk filament — that gives the cloth its glassy transparency and faint sheen. Mills that degum the yarn get a softer, duller fabric; the true Chanderi hand is slightly papery to the touch, cool against the skin, and holds a shape rather than collapsing.
Three constructions dominate the market. Pure silk Chanderi is the most lustrous and the most expensive. Silk-cotton Chanderi — silk warp, cotton weft — is the everyday workhorse of the trade, giving the sheen of silk with cotton's breathability and a friendlier price. Cotton Chanderi is the most matte and the most forgiving in humid weather. Across all three, the decorative language is the same: small woven butis, zari checks and a heavier zari or resham border, worked on the loom rather than added later. Is Chanderi pure silk?
Not always. Pure silk Chanderi exists, but most Chanderi in the market is silk-cotton — a silk warp with cotton weft — and some is all cotton. We state the exact composition of whatever we quote.
Why is Chanderi transparent?
Because the yarn is traditionally woven un-degummed, retaining its natural sericin. That gum gives the fabric its glassy sheerness and slight crispness; degumming softens the cloth but loses the signature.
Does Chanderi need lining?
For most garments, yes. Its sheerness is a design feature and is normally handled with a matching or contrast lining, which also protects the light weave from stress at the seams.
How should Chanderi be cared for?
Dry cleaning is safest for zari and pure silk qualities. Cotton Chanderi can be gently hand-washed in cold water, dried in shade and pressed on the reverse with a moderate iron.
