The Banarasi tradition dates to the Mughal ateliers of Varanasi and remains one of the most technically demanding weaves in India. Fine silk warp is worked with a supplementary weft of pure or tested zari and resham threads in kadhwa, cutwork or meenakari technique. Motifs are drawn from Mughal jaali, kalga-bel, buti and paisley vocabularies. A single six-yard length can take a master weaver weeks to complete. What arrives is a cloth with the lustre of silk, the ornament of jewellery and the memory of an unbroken lineage.
