Wild silks come from silkworms reared outside the controlled mulberry cycle, and the difference shows in the cloth. Tussar has a nubby, dry surface and a natural honey tone that resists deep dyeing, so shades read warmer. Muga, from Assam, carries a distinctive golden lustre that deepens rather than fades with washing. Eri — spun rather than reeled, since the cocoon is left open — is soft, matte and wool-like, and is the warmest of the three. All are heavier and more textured than mulberry silk, and all take natural dye particularly well.
