Fabric Overview

Ajrak is one of the oldest surviving block-printed cottons in the subcontinent, worked by the Khatri community in Kutch and Sindh through a sequence of up to sixteen resist, mordant and dyeing stages. The characteristic palette is disciplined — deep indigo, madder red, iron black and a cream ground — and the motifs are symmetrical, tessellating star, jaal and cypress compositions that read the same from either side. Colour comes from natural sources: indigo, harda, alum, iron, madder root. The cotton base is medium-weight, breathable, and softens beautifully with each wash.
